R&D Tax Credit Assessment
The federal R&D credit, also known as the Research & Experimentation Credit, the Credit for Increasing Research Activities, or simply the Research Credit, has been around since 1981. It encourages the creation and improvement of new products, processes and software here in the United States. R&D tax credits and other incentives are also found in other countries such as Canada, China, France, India, Japan, Korea, United Kingdom and others.
Over the years, the credit has become applicable to more and more businesses. In recent years, more guidance has been provided by the IRS and better clarity has been provided by the courts in areas where taxpayers and the IRS traditionally disagree. (Most cases since 2009 have favored the taxpayer over the IRS.)
